You Can Buy 'The Flash' as an NFT Just Weeks After Hitting Theaters

DateJul 15, 2023

Warner Bros. has confirmed that the new DC Comics superhero movie “The Flash” will be available to purchase via an NFT the same day the film hits traditional digital platforms.

“The Flash” Web3 Movie Experience will be available to purchase on July 18 via blockchain service Eluvio using credit card or cryptocurrency. Owners will be able to watch the film in 4K Ultra HD resolution, access special features, collect artwork, and unlock augmented reality (AR) collectibles.

According to Warner, the app's digital content is also hosted on the Eluvio blockchain—not just the NFT access token itself. There are two NFT options available to fans, and every purchase comes with a randomly selected character-based key art, each with its own level of rarity.

The “Mystery” edition will cost $35, and come with one of four pieces of key art (Prime Barry, Young Barry, Batman, or Supergirl) alongside one of four dynamic menu interfaces that will be revealed after purchase. The Mystery edition is limited to 10,000 copies.

Meanwhile, the “Premium” edition will retail for $100, but is limited to just 2,000 copies. The NFT will feature one of two pieces of motion art (featuring The Flash, Supergirl and Batman together, or Dark Flash) alongside all four explorable dynamic menu interfaces. The Premium edition also features exclusive special features.

Owners of “The Flash” Web3 Movie Experience will also receive a voucher that can be redeemed to claim a DC3 Super Power Pack NFT from DC NFT Marketplace. Each Super Power Pack contains a randomly selected trio of digital comics, with rarity levels ranging from Common to Legendary.

Released into theaters just last month, “The Flash” sees the titular speedster use his powers to go back in time to try and avoid a personal tragedy, only to inadvertently alter history entirely. It went on to take just over $261 million at the box office, against a reported $200 million production budget and a $65 million marketing spend.

The release of “The Flash” Web3 Movie Experience is the third WB Movieverse NFT release following “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition)” last October and the 1978 “Superman” movie in June. Owners of those NFTs will have early access to the “Flash” NFT sale, alongside DC Bat Cowl and DC3 NFT holders.

Fans can then resell their “Flash” NFT from August 1 via a community marketplace. Warner Bros. and Eluvio are calling this as the first time that a major studio film is being released via NFT at the same time it hits traditional digital platforms.

“This is a chance for DC fans to own a piece of motion picture history,” said Eluvio co-founder and CEO Michelle Munson, in a release.
